Gasoline and diesel hybrid powertrains kick off the powertrain choices for Mazda CX-80.

Mazda Launches CX-80 Larger Crossover in Europe

Modest increase in length and height allows third-row seating in automaker's latest family-focused crossover.

Mazda unveils its flagship larger midsize crossover in Europe with the CX-80 offering third-row seating.

The launch follows the success of its current midsized Mazda CX-60 in both European and U.S. markets. It is the latest model to use the automaker’s large-vehicle platform and will be initially available with two hybrid-assisted powertrains in gasoline and diesel for European markets.

It uses the same engines as seen in the CX-60 featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining the automaker’s 148-hp Skyactiv-G 2.5L gasoline 4-cyl. with a 175-hp electric motor and a 17.8-kWh high-capacity battery. The other option is a 3.3L, 250-hp e-Skyactiv D diesel inline 6-cyl. with M Hybrid Boost using regenerative braking energy stored in a small lithium-ion battery. Across both powertrain options, the Mazda CX-80 is matched to all-wheel drive.

Third-row seating comes courtesy of a wheelbase increased by 250 mm (9.8 in) compared to its smaller sibling. It is 25 mm (1 in.) taller but with an identical width. Technology highlights revealed so far include Alexa in-car voice control of music, air conditioning, navigation and third-party apps.

Among the safety features, Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS) with Unresponsive Driver Support is adopted for the first time in Europe. When CTS is active, the system alerts the driver, confirming if the driver closes one's eyes or looks away from the road ahead. If the driver's condition remains unchanged, the system assists in decelerating and stopping the vehicle to mitigate damage in an accident caused by sudden illness or careless driving.

Mazda CX-80 prices will start from £48,920 ($60,968) and deliveries will begin in autumn.

Jeremy Thomson, managing director, Mazda Motors UK, says, “The all-new Mazda CX-80 is a car that will allow us to challenge the established premium brands in the market with a luxury SUV that is the most spacious car in Mazda’s European lineup.”
