DETROIT – Mercedes-Benz rolls out a significantly refreshed E-Class lineup here at the North American International Auto Show.

In addition to restyled front and rear ends and loads of new safety and convenience technologies, the revamped sedans, coupes, cabriolets and wagons will be available with 18 engine and driveline combinations, Daimler Chairman Dieter Zetsche says.

Those offerings will include a 4-cyl. diesel engine “that will have many people rethink everything they’ve heard about diesel before,” he says. A diesel hybrid and a 3.0L twin-turbo direct-injection V-6 also will be available.

A new E63 AMG is touted as the most powerful E-Class model ever, delivering up to 585 hp generated by the newly developed AMG 4Matic drivetrain.

The 4-cyl. diesel makes 190 hp and 369 lb.-ft. (500 Nm) of torque and will be available in the fall, replacing the V-6 diesel currently offered in the rear-drive-only E350.

An E400 hybrid powered by a 302-hp V-6 paired with a 27-hp electric motor also will be available. Fuel economy is estimated at 24/30 mpg (9.8-7.8 L/100 km) city/highway.
