Mazda Takes Wraps Off All-New CX-3 CUV

Mazda expects new CX-3 to become a core model in its global lineup when it goes on sale next year.

Mazda at the L.A. auto show today unveils the all-new ’16 CX-3 CUV, the fifth vehicle in the automaker’s lineup featuring its Skyactiv powertrain technology and Kodo design language.

Slotting in under the CX-5 CUV, the CX-3 boasts a prominent grille with silver-painted edges that meet the narrow LED headlamps. The front fenders are pushed rearward to convey greater size than the car’s actual dimensions.

The CX-3’s body is divided into three sections, with the long nose flowing into a body with subtle curves creating a fluidic side profile. Blacked out D-pillars and a solid mass at the rear give the car a look of “strength and power,” Mazda says.

Inside, attention is paid to detail, quality of materials and spatial proportions. All information displays and control systems are positioned in accordance with Mazda’s Heads-up Cockpit strategy, which is meant to cut down on driver distraction by keeping eyes on the road.

The car is powered by a 2.0L Skyactiv-G inline 4-cyl. engine and comes available with optional all-wheel-drive. Mazda has yet to announce engine output for the CX-3, but in other applications the 2.0L mill makes 163 hp and 155 lb.-ft. (210 Nm) of torque.

The CX-3 also adopts Mazda’s new Skyactiv-Body architecture, which is designed to improve safety, reduce weight and strengthen rigidity. The body is composed of high- and ultra-high-tensile steel that the automaker says also improves damping characteristics.

The engine comes mated to a standard Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed transmission that Mazda says provides the feel of a manual gearbox while improving fuel economy.

The CX-3 goes on sale globally, starting in Japan, next year. The automaker says it expects the new model to be a core vehicle in its global lineup. Pricing will be set closer to the release date, Mazda says.
