Canada’s big-truck market posted a combined Class 4-8 sales rise of 5.7% in July on the strength of demand in the heavy-duty sector and the second month in a row of year-over-year sales increases, WardsAuto data shows.
Class 8 deliveries jumped 11.8% on a daily basis last month to 2,536 trucks, bringing the 7-month total to 16,349 units, good for a 2.8% increase over last year. International led all July sales gainers with a 53.8% spike while Peterbilt was up 29.2% and Volvo rose 24.5%.
The medium-duty sector was off 6.9% to 1,028 units with all classes posting losses except for Class 7, which was up 8.6% over prior-year. Ford deliveries in Class 7 soared 124.4%, albeit on small volume. PACCAR’s Kenworth brand rose 22.6% and Peterbilt was up 64.4%. The only manufacturer to post a loss in the segment was share leader International, down 16.4%, equating to a loss of nearly 10 percentage points of market share.
Class 6 sales plunged 32.7% with Hino posting the only gain of 44.2%. Class leader Internationl suffered a 36.6% decline and Ford was down 86.6%.
In Class 5, deliveries were nearly flat with 516 units sold in the month against 496 units in prior-year. Sales leader Ford was up 21.5% along with Isuzu, up 37.4%, but these gains were offset by declines in International, down 42.3% and Chrysler, off 24.0%.
Class 4 suffered the largest decline, falling 35.6% on sales of only 77 units. Ford fell 37.6% while Isuzu was the only manufacturer to post a gain with domestic models up 5.8% and imports higher by 44.2%.
