Stellantis Adds Hungarian Plant to BEV Component Production

Szentgotthard factory joins French and North American sites for electric drive module production.

Stellantis intends to boost its future battery-electric vehicle production as it adds electric-drive-module (EDM) production at its Hungarian plant.

Production of the modules at the Szentgotthard facility is due to begin in late 2026, joining the automaker’s other two EDM production plants in Tremery-Metz, France, and Kokomo, IN, in the U.S.

Its €103 million ($111 million) investment in Szentgotthard includes grants and contributions from the Hungarian government. Stellantis is also making investments in other electrified powertrain component production including the Mirafiori, Italy, complex which is increasing production of next-generation electrified dual-clutch transmissions in 2024 for Stellantis hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The automaker says in a statement EDMs produced at the Hungary plant will be used in vehicles built on an upcoming BEV-centric STLA platform and that production of modules will be housed in existing buildings at the plant.

New work related to electric-drive production at the plant will include machining of certain key components and final assembly and testing of 3-in-1 EDMs that combine the electric motor, reduction gearset and inverter into a single unit.

Szentgotthard’s facility currently builds 1.2L turbocharged 3-cyl. and 1.6L 4-cyl. internal-combustion engines used in a variety of Stellantis brand vehicles. Plant employees will be trained to support the machining and assembly requirements of EDM production.

Arnaud Deboeuf, Stellantis chief manufacturing officer, says, “Bringing production of electric-drive modules to Szentgotthard to support our transformation towards electrification is another important part of our goal to provide customers with clean, safe and affordable mobility.”
